- NYAC’s Teddy Kalp Represents Canada
-
Alex Hamilton - Top 10 at Paul Bergen

NYAC’s Teddy Kalp was one of sixteen Canadian teens on Canada’s squad that just returned from the Clearwater Aquatic Age Group and Open Invitational between January 14 -16, 2012 in Florida. Kalp won the 1500 Free in 16:12.41 and snagged 2nd in the boys 400 Free with a time of 4:04:00. The Canadian team of 14-16 year olds competed and trained in the US after the Christmas break. It was a very successful trip with 16 gold, 11 silver and 14 bronze medals. Teddy and the Canadian team stayed in Clearwater for a valuable 7 day training camp afterwards.

See the full article on the Swimming Canada website.

Alex Hamilton made the Ontario provincial team tour to the Paul Bergen Invitational meet. The Paul Bergen meet has become one of the best 18 and under meets in North America and typically features teams from around the world, including Britain, France and Germany sending their best juniors. Western Canada & Quebec also participated. Alex placed top 10 in both the 1500 Free - 15:59:45 and 200 Fly - 2:07:70. He was 18th in the 400 Free - 4:01:56.

P2 Meet Report by Coach Brent Aquino

I would like to first take this opportunity to thank the North York Aquatic Club for giving me the opportunity to coach the Provincial 2 group.

“Here to race”, on Dec 2nd was the beginning of the Mega City meet. The group was ready and very excited to swim fast. The group swam many great individual performances and many of those swims where personal best times. We have been focusing on the racing concept of the “negative split”, and using the legs for a very strong kick during the second half of the race. The group stepped up and gave it their all. I was proud to watch every one of the swimmers get on the blocks, dive in (considering we don’t have start blocks) and be very competitive from the start. I know many of the swimmers had some mental breakthroughs as well, which allowed them to stay relaxed and focus on their race strategies and tactics to finish their races with determination and courage.

Some great performances to acknowledge:
Donna Bayat - 100 Free
Niki Bayat - 100 Back
Jordon Kazan - 50 Free
Isaac Kim - 100 Fly
Katrina Laham - 200 Back
Kaitlyn Lem - 200 IM
Andrew Longwell - 200 Free
Ayelet Lustgarten - 200 IM
Lauren Meilen - 200 Back
Laura Morales-Pires - 200 Back
Tal Naidik - 200 IM
Alessandro Stipo - 200 Free
Miranda Zhou - 200 Free

I would like to congratulate and thank the parents and swimmers of P2 group, for their dedication, enthusiasm, and support. Keep up the great swimming.

Go NYAC GO...

Ohio State's Michelle Williams surges in and out of pool

Article by Nick Dvorscak
The Lantern of The Ohio State University
January 17, 2012

Being an athlete and a student can sometimes be a daunting task at Ohio State. For sophomore swimmer Michelle Williams, the concept isn't quite as difficult. In fact, Williams makes it looks easy. During the 2010-11 season, Williams was one of few student-athletes at OSU to record a perfect 4.

Still a NYAC member, Michelle is in her second year on an NCAA scholarship at OSU.

Please share your pictures and your skills
 Got Photos?
We need your pictures! As you snap pictures of your swimmers this year - at meets, practices or other NYAC social events - please share them. That way we can make sure we have lots of great photos for next year’s yearbook and video. Please send your photos to your pool rep and indicate at what event they were taken. NYAC will soon have a Flickr account available for uploads – details to follow.

Calling Yearbook and Video Volunteers
Every year NYAC swimmers love seeing the yearbook and video. We need a volunteer to lead each of these initiatives. With parents sending in their photos – you’ll be in charge or helping to produce the yearbook or video. If you’ve got a slightly creative side or can use Mac software to make a video, that’s all the experience you need. Plus you’ll receive points towards lowering your swim fees next year in exchange for your work. It’s also lots of fun and a great way to showcase NYAC. If you are interested, or would like more info please contact Lisa Papas at lisapapas@rogers.com .

Expectations:

Is My Child Getting Better
Now that we are half way through the season, parents often wonder how their swimmer is doing. Are they getting better? Faster? These are two very different measurements and it’s important to understand the difference. Don’t confuse getting faster with getting better.

What does this mean?

At NYAC we want to teach swimmers how to race. Swimming fast is fun. But it’s the process of how that evolves that’s most important. How do we race, compete and get better? Those who know me have heard me say “it’s not how fast you swim, but how you swim fast”, and I truly believe it’s important to understand this.

It’s not just about the time on the clock. It’s about the skills our swimmers are acquiring. The acquisition of skills at a young age is paramount.

The emphasis shouldn’t just be on the stopwatch. It’s natural to look at the clock, but it’s not the only important thing. Speed will come later, but you can’t improve with bad technique. Again, it’s about developing the proper skills.

The Training Environment

There are two sides to the training environment: the physical side and the mental side:

Physical:
The physical side of swimming is all about skills. It’s like designing a good sailing hull. The body that moves through the water needs to do so in the most efficient way. This means learning to come off the wall properly, learning how to kick properly with the legs and drive the stroke. It’s also about combining speed and endurance. It’s about taking one single stroke and perfecting it to the requirements of the race so that every stroke in every lap is the best it can be. Physical maturation is also key. Coordination levels in children develop at different points; often girls before boys. And growth spurts are unpredictable. A 13-year old boy who has sprouted to 6-feet may hold a temporary advantage over his friend who has yet to grow. Everyone grows at different rates. Recognizing this, and encouraging children through these stages is vital.

Mental:
Teaching swimmers to get the best out of themselves is equally important. They need to learn to read the pace clock and push themselves in practice. It’s about putting their skills under the stress of training and learning to execute under the stress of training. As swimmers progress, they also need to learn about the distance they cover per stroke. They need to assess the racing environment and learn how to execute races properly by budgeting their efforts and pacing. And finally, there’s the sheer mental aspect of swimming. They have to learn to harness the anxiety and stress of racing in a positive way and this will drive the swimmer to excel.

At NYAC our focus is on teaching kids how to swim fast. Our coaches are trained to teach proper technique in the water so our swimmers can learn to swim, learn to train and learn to race.

Swim Wear
and
Equipment

Swim & Sports is the official supplier of NYAC swim wear and equipment and is now ready to process your orders. Order forms will made available at the BBQ (Sep 16) or emailed as per your request to our Team Equipment Manager, Sandy Jin. NYAC's orders are processed in the following manner: t-shirts, caps and practice equipment first. Orders for track jackets, bags etc. next, and finally NYAC officials shirts. This is to ensure our swimmers have everything they need for practice first. All inquiries regarding orders should be emailed to Sandy Jin at nyacwear@rogers.com . She will be able to track your order and communicate with Swim & Sports directly on your behalf. We would appreciate your patience and refrain from calling the office.

Question: What is required?
Answer: NYAC asks that all swimmers have a black bathing suit, a black "NYAC SWIMMING" t-shirt and a NYAC swim cap for competitions. We ask that all of our parents have a white collared officials shirt, to wear when officiating, that can also be purchased from Swim & Sports.

For the Youth, Provincial , National Development and National groups a black NYAC speedo team track jacket is also required.

Question: What equipment?
Answer: NYAC coaches should indicate to you what is required of your swimmer. The common pieces of equipment your swimmer will need are goggles, fins, kickboard and pull-buoy. Please check with your coach if these are required. Lists are available at Swim & Sports.
There will not be swim suits to try on at Douglas Snow on Equipment Day (Sep 24), as personal fitting takes time and skill and your swimmer can be helped best at the Swim & Sports store.

Swim & Sports Business Hours
The store is open 4 days a week as follows:
Thursday & Friday: 10am to 8pm
Saturday & Sunday: 10am to 6pm
Please see the links below for a sample sheet of the NYAC Team Wear, as well as information on the location and hours of Swim & Sports.

Welcome back & we look forward to a great new season!
Sincerely
Natalie Lychy
