 Canada Cup Meet Report

November 2011
by NYAC Head Coach, Murray Drudge

The Canada Cup is the premiere senior event for this time of the season and draws athletes from all over Canada. This year England sent a contingent of their 18 and under swimmers to gain from this very fast event. Many meet records were set and a new Canadian LC record was also set in the womens 100 fly (57:34) by Katarine Savard of CSQ in Quebec.

Bronze medal - men's 1500 free - Alex Hamilton 16:12:47 !

For the evening final Alex Hamilton (16) led the field in this exciting race for most of the way just being out muscled by Dalhousie University swimmer Chris Reith (22) for the silver. Olympian Tobias Oriwal (25) had the fastest time from the morning session 16:06:52 and ended up winning the gold. Alex was the youngest male swimmer in the meet to win a medal.

Teddy Kalp, who just turned 15, 2 weeks ago showed he could swim with the men placing 6th overall in the men's 1500 free - 16:20:00. In the morning session he won his heat overtaking Dalhousie university swimmer Kyle Watson in the last 150 meters with an amazing finish! Additionally, Teddy went 4:00:14 in the 400 free on Saturday morning and was 1st alternate, almost earning a second swim. Both swims were personal best times for him.

Alex Jin was the only 14 year old male in the meet and showed he could also race with the men. His 200 free was a personal best in 1:58:91 (69th) and 200 fly in 2:10:90 (38th) was very close. Learning to race in an environment where there is no chance of winning a medal or even getting a second swim really shows the maturity of this up and coming young athlete.

Our own pride and joy Michelle Williams was home for American Thanksgiving from Ohio State University and put on a great display in the women's 50 free (26:36) for 4th place. Michelle was also a finalist in the 100 free with a time of 56:45. With a blistering start, that has greatly improved, Michelle broke out with the pack in both events and was very close to personal bests which is outstanding for this time of year.

Caitlin Hodge led the NYAC swimmers with most swims in finals. Her 200 fly (2:19:03) 11th place was the first of a hard double on Saturday night. She quickly followed it up one event later in the 400 free with less than 20 minutes in between. The morning swim in the 400 free was a new club record of 4:16:54 for 15-17 women. Caitlin was also 13th in the 800 free.

Getting back in form was Eduardo Toro returning to NYAC from Oakland University in Michigan. Eddy is trying to qualify for the London Olympics for Paraguay. His 100 breast in 1:03:92 in Prelims and 200 IM in 2:11:37 in the Consols were well on track and a sign of good things to come.

Well done NYAC !
