Coach Liliana

Welcome back!  Now that everybody has had a welcome holiday and rest, we can start working on speed, starts and turns to be ready for the next swim meets.  After a long period of training, the Bronze group will compete in Cornwall at the Cornwall Spring Meet, May 7th.  The Silver group has the chance to get personal best times and qualify for the "regionals" at the Festival of Spring meet at the Nepean Sportsplex, May 12th - 14th.
The time has come for swimmers and parents to think about and decide on the summer program.  There are a limited number of places in this program (for information see the April 4th SPLASH).

Update from the Board of Directors

Hello to All,

I hope everyone had a great Easter Weekend complete with...carrots!  I just wanted to keep you up to date on the communication front.  In the past two days I have received e-mails with questions that may be of interest to all of the parents of the Silver & Bronze groups.  That being said, I would like to have an informal, question & answer format meeting with the parents of those groups.  This coming Saturday, April 22, we can meet in the pool classroom from 7:15 a.m. - 8:30 a.m. in order to respond to any concerns that you may have.  In attendance will be myself, Carole Houde (Secretary) and Sheri Ohlman-Coughlan.  Mary Raphael will be unable to attend as she is out of town.

Thank you and we hope to see you there.

 Kathy White

President

Tip of the Week

I am not sure I could offer any tips to coaches that they haven’t heard before. So moms and dads, this one is for you.

As parents and coaches we all fall prey to the constant griping that a large percentage of today’s youth is, for lack of a better word, irresponsible. Responsibility is one character trait that will ultimately determine just how much success your child finds in the pool, in the classroom and later on in the big world.

As coaches, we are constantly building upon previous training in an effort to develop great swimmers. As parents, I believe we can apply the same type of progressive lessons when it comes to responsibility.

A little over five years ago a mother stopped me after a workout and asked me a question about her son, who was to swim in an upcoming meet.

“Did he ask you if he could swim the 200 free,” she asked.

“No, he did not,” I said.

She then replied, “Well, I guess he doesn’t want to swim it that badly,” and walked away.

At first I thought this was a little harsh, since the boy was only 7 years old at the time. But now when I look back, I can recognize what a valuable lesson she taught her son by not doing something that he could do for himself.

Nowadays, he continues to take full responsibility for his swimming and understands that he is in total control of his successes and failures. And he continues to be one of the easiest kids to coach.

So the next time you and your swimmer are headed off to swim practice, and you reach down to pick up their swim bag, ask yourself “is this helping my child learn to be responsible?

TEAM EQUIPMENT

In stock team equipment can be purchased by contacting Sheri  by phone, e-mail, or at the pool on Saturday mornings from 7:30-8:30am.  We currently have polyester suits and custom team bags in stock as well as two second had team jackets size 10-12 and 14-16.  Please contact Sheri at 836-8235 or e-mail at s_coughlan@sympatico.ca

Parents may have noticed that the GAC caps and Team Suits are fading quickly, this is due to high chlorine levels as well as daily use.  The caps are latex and will eventually break down, therefore it is suggested that swimmers keep their Team Caps and Suits solely for swim meet use and purchase training suits and caps for daily use.  It is also a good idea to have an extra GAC cap on hand at meets in case of rips and tears.
