"What this power is I cannot say; all I know is that it exists and it becomes available only when a man is in that state of mind in which he knows exactly what he wants and is fully determined not to quit until he finds it."

Rob

Coach Liliana

Our Silver swimmers who participated to the Go Kingfish Long Course
Invitational swim meet did a very good job. They finished the races with
ribbons, medals and personal best times. They narrowly missed qualifying times
for the "Regionals", some by just 2 seconds or even 0.02 seconds.

Congratulations!

We have one week ahead to work on speed, starts and turns until the Long
Course Eastern Ontario Championship, so that we will have the chance to get more good
results!

The Kingston Sharks Swim Club - Distance/Novice Meet, on 4th of June
gives our Bronze swimmers the chance to finish the season with good results and
more ribbons
.

Tip of the Week: Becoming a Complete Swimmer

This week’s Speedo Tip of the Week comes from Maciej Rakowski, a member of the Topeka Swim Association. His advice is on becoming a complete swimmer.

Rakowski's Tip:
As coaches, we do this job because it is our passion, because we love to be around our athletes, instruct them, coach them and see them succeed. In each team, there are swimmers who are more motivated and some who are less motivated. However, there are some kids that we, as coaches, can learn the most from by the way they interact with the team and with us. These swimmers are the core of the team; they are “complete swimmers.” A special link exists between a coach and a complete swimmer that others will never experience. It is based on common respect, common love for swimming, common appreciation, friendship and a common goal to achieve. They want to share their all failures and successes because they work together.

Here are a few tips to becoming a complete swimmer:

Come to every practice. Don’t be afraid to work hard; this is the only way to succeed in any sport.

Show respect to your coach and other swimmers, and be there for them when they need you.

Love this sport more than any other activity and take pride in being part of the team.

Always be ready to change the way you swim, or else you will stay behind while others move forward.

Listen to what your coach is trying to teach you. Trust him or her, but don’t be afraid to ask “Why?”

Set challenging goals every season and work hard to achieve them.

Know that success won’t come to you; you need to challenge your mind and body to get there. Once you achieve your goal, you will cry from happiness because you’ll remember how much hard work you did to get there.

Remember to smile, joke and laugh; we are all here to have fun!

Update from the Board of Directors

Hi Everyone,

I hope you all had a wonderful holiday weekend.  On behalf of the Board of Directors and the members, I would like to extend our sympathies to our Head Coach, Rob Beattie and his family.  Recently he lost his mother, Elizabeth who resided in Australia.  Rob had a twinkle in his eye as he told me stories about his family and home life.  May your memories all be good Rob, our thoughts are with you.  Incidentally, it seems that Rob followed in his mom’s footsteps in representing Australia in swimming.  Mrs. Beattie represented Australia at the Berlin Olympics in the breaststroke and Rob himself at two World Championships also in breaststroke.  I for one am totally impressed!

It is with great pleasure that we can finally set the date for the next General Meeting of all members of the Goulbourn Aquatic Club.  This meeting is to be held at the Goulbourn Municipal Offices, 2135 Huntley Road (Main St. Stittsville turns into Huntley Rd. at Flewellyn) on Thursday June 22, 2006 from 7:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.  The Agenda for this meeting is as follows:

TEAM EQUIPMENT

In stock team equipment can be purchased by contacting Johanne Fauvelle  by phone, e-mail, or at the pool on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday evenings from 5:00-5:30pm.  We currently have polyester suits and custom team bags in stock as well as two second had team jackets size 10-12 and 14-16.  Please contact Johanne at 831-9605 or e-mail at rejeanp@sympatico.ca

Parents may have noticed that the GAC caps and Team Suits are fading quickly, this is due to high chlorine levels as well as daily use.  The caps are latex and will eventually break down, therefore it is suggested that swimmers keep their Team Caps and Suits solely for swim meet use and purchase training suits and caps for daily use.  It is also a good idea to have an extra GAC cap on hand at meets in case of rips and tears.
