Guelph Marlins are National Champions!

On the weekend of May 26-29, 2004 eleven Guelph Marlins traveled to Montreal for the national Championships of Lifesaving. This mighty team endured three fifteen-hour days of competition against athletes from across the country. In the end the Marlins won the overall competition, beating the second place team from Quebec by over 190 points. Six of the athletes are University of Guelph students, five of them are members of the varsity swim team, the rest of the team are highschool students. Marlins set nine of ten Canadian records at the meet bringing home 27 medals. Top top male athlete of the meet was Scott Van Doormal with runner up Adam Nicholson. The top female athlete was Steph Hatt with Jen Ellison as runner upThe Men’s relay teams broke three national records, the women broke two national records. Individually, both Scott Van Doormaal and Steph Hatt broke two national records each.

It was a great weekend for the Marlins — coach Don Burton was very pleased with the results. Six of the members of the Marlins were asked to be part of the national team for the 2004 World Lifesaving Championships in Italy this September.

The national Championship trophy will be displayed at the Victor Davis pool in the Marlin trophy case outside of the change rooms for the next year. Come and see it!
