At the Jr Provincial Lifesaving Championship Aug 6
The Guelph Marlin Lifesaving Club sent 12 athletes to Jr Provincials and brought home over 50 medals, placing 2nd overall, and proving that the Marlins are a force on the waterfront as well as in the pool.
Competitive Lifesaving is a relatively new sport in Canada that requires an athlete to train for speed, agility and endurance, to save lives in pool and open water situations.
Guelph is on the leading edge in this sport! Following the appointment of Don Burton as head coach of the National Lifesaving team, and Guelph’s victory at the Canadian Lifeguard Championships in May, the summer Lifesaving Club was formed. Swimmers trained in the pool and on the water at Guelph Lake this summer to compete in beach run, beach flags, rescue tube, paddleboard and Iron Guard events.
Saturday’s beach events were held at Professor’s Lake in Brampton, but poor water quality there forced a change in venue to Cherry Beach on Lake Ontario, and unfortunately the cancellation of the Surf Swim … an event the Marlins were expected to dominate! That did not stop our swimmers from each placing in the top three overall in all events combined, and from having a great day at the beach!

At the Ontario Sr Provincial Lifesaving Championships, Wasaga Beach Aug 15/16
Andrew Ford was 3rd and Scott Van Doormaal saw 2 nd in the surf swim (a swim in the lake). For the finals for the 600 meter board race, Scott placed 9th and Andrew was 13th out of the 16 finalists. Both raced the 90 meter beach spring, but these pool rats did not advance to the finals.
In the second day of competition, Scott and Andrew placed 3rd in the rescue board relay. In this event, 2 athletes start on the beach. Athlete number 1 swims out to a buoy fast as they can. When they reach the buoy, they touch it and raise their other hand. The second athlete then runs with a rescue board (looks like a surf board), paddles out to that first person and puts them on the board. Then the 2 athletes paddle back to shore as fast as they can. Andrew and Scott only practiced this event a couple of times before the actual race, but they did very well.
Scott also placed 5th in the 2 km beach run and 5th in the iron guard (swim, beach run and rescue board).
