 Our Focus for
Championship Season

Head Coach's Message

January 2010

Murray Drudge
NYAC Head Coach
 Heading into Championship Season, it's a useful exercise to reflect on where we have been and to focus on what lies ahead.

The competitive swim year is broken into 3 sections: The first runs from September through to December. We have just ended this section where the focus was on (other than getting into shape), stroke development and event versatility. NYAC swimmers should be paying attention to being efficient in all 4 strokes Read more...

December 2009
 NYAC's Senior group kicked off the season with a sprint meet at University of Toronto hosted by TSC. Witnessing some seriously fast swims from the UofT varsity squad must have given a boost of confidence to our swimmers as personal best times were swam by over half of the group in their first competition and only five weeks into their training schedule.

Youth Cup and Guelph Meet Reports

December 2009

 There is really the only genuine stepping stone to high achievement. The risk is great, for failure can bring with it many burdensome and highly toxic consequences. You can lose your nerve, your focus, your confidence, and your competitive spirit. However without challenge, the truth is you never really discover or develop the toughness, the determination, the persistence, the resilience to become a truly fierce competitor. Read more...

 I enjoyed training with the best long distance swimmers in Canada. As a long distance swimmer I am often the last one to leave the pool, as the long distance events are often at the end. So, it was fun being with girls who understand how that feels. Read more...

 Upcoming Officiating Clinics

Starter Officiating Clinic Cancelled

The NYAC in-house Starter clinic scheduled for Saturday, March 6 at Douglas Snow has been cancelled as the Central Region Swim Officials are holding an Officials Clinic at George Brown College on the same date.

Central Region (CR) Spring Officials Clinics
Saturday, March 6, 2010
George Brown College, Casa Loma Campus, Toronto
See all the details here...

These free clinics offer all Level 1 and 2 courses. Each clinic is completed in a two hour session, and sessions are run in the morning and afternoon.

It is recommended that those attending the Meet Manager clinic in the morning plan to attend the Hy-Tek for Meet Manager clinic in the afternoon.

This is a great opportunity for parents to move up the officiating ladder and help support our swimmers and club. Please consider taking one (or more) of these free courses.

Online Officiating Clinics

Parents, siblings, relatives and friends of NYAC swimmers are encouraged to enrol in one of the Swim Ontario (SO) officials online clinics. At this time SO offers the Timers, Strokes and Turns (head lane timer), and Chief Timers clinic online.

Just a reminder that each NYAC family is required to have one person qualified as a timekeeper and one person qualified as a strokes and turns (head lane timer) judge.

Latest Release

The Ontario Swim Officials Association (OSOA) has now also released the five remaining level 2 officiating clinics that can be taken online. These courses include:

* Chief Judge Electronics
* Chief Finish Judge
* Clerk of Course
* Recorder Scorer
* Meet Management

This is a great opportunity for our families to diversify their officiating skills and move "up the ladder" of officiating. This is critical as all clubs are required by Swim Ontario to have officials at senior levels.
Completing these courses is also of great assistance to our club as these are critical positions in hosting a meet.
These courses can be taken by anyone who has completed the level 1 timers course.
Please consider taking the time to complete one (or more) of these courses.

Contact Brent Lockridge at bklockridge<at>sympatico.ca for more information and to obtain the enrolment password for the Swim Ontario clinic site.

 NYAC Age 2 in the Spotlight
Profile by Sarah Chan - Coach: Age 2 Group
January 2010

This year's Age 2 group is comprised of 23 dedicated swimmers ranging from 9 to 14 years of age. These swimmers train four times a week and compete at one to two swim meets a month. It is definitely a privilege to coach the Age 2 group for the second time. I absolutely love coaching this group of swimmers because they each bring youth, enthusiasm, and character to every practice.

Guideline from Swim Ontario Regarding the New Swim Suit Technology
NYAC recommends that swimmers not yet competing at a National level (Intro, Age, Youth, Provincial 1&2, Senior) do not require spending money on new suit technology. We recommend that our age groupers learn skills and fundamentals of racing first and save "the suit" for when they are at an advanced level of competing. Trying to get an edge on performance by wearing these suits too early only circumvents this process and can put the young swimmer in a situation where they appear out of place amongst other teams and swimmers at the age group level. It is strongly recommended that all NYAC families consider this carefully before purchasing an advanced level suit and refer to the coaching staff any questions or concerns. Swim & Sports, our equipment provider will also advise our members of our club's philosophy upon swim suit selection.

 Julia Just Off World Record

Julia Wilkinson and Michelle Williams with NYAC Head Coach,
Murray Drudge, at the 2009 British SC Grand Prix in Leeds UK
 Julia Wilkinson came within 0.48 of the world record winning the 100m IM at the 2009 British SC Grand Prix in Leeds UK. However, her time of 59:28 set a new Canadian record. ‘’I’m happy but not satisfied,’’ said Wilkinson. ‘’I was gunning for the world record and just missed it by less than a half second. My turns were a lot better in the final and my breaststroke to freestyle transition was very strong. I probably needed just a bit more training.’’ Wilkinson underwent shoulder surgery last fall and only returned to training this spring. Michelle Williams placed 2nd in the B final and set a new NYAC record for the 100m Fly with a time of 1:00.49. This improves the previous record of 1:02.31 held by Mich MacPherson since 1982.
