May 2008

Meetings with Murray
After Olympic trials we are all taking inventory and refocusing for the summer season. All athletes will have their start up indivdual 20 minute meetings with me scheduled for Wednesdays and Fridays between 6-7pm. The agenda includes a) meet commitments b) goal times and tactics c) training adjustments and d) stroke modifications. Be prepared and know what you intend to commit to.

Team Champs

The Team Champs were better than expected for our group considering we swam well at Trials. Some of you really outdid yourselves and if we had not done well at Trials I would have thought we missed the taper. Michelle @ 1:01:63 for 100 Fly - yikes - very good for stretch in every event especially 200 Free!

Head Shaving
There is just one thing I want to talk about and that is the head shaving by the boys. You all must remember that you are role models for the rest of the club. If there is any intimidation or forced behaviour it borders on bullying and that is unacceptable - by the way, since when do we do this at Team Champs? This is a National thing and any rookie iniations always need to be okayed by me - no exceptions - no one will feel they have to do anything if they are uncomfortable with it. That's why I'm involved. We are lucky those two boys in John's group were okay with it and even more so, their parents. We could have had some parents who would have been way more extreme. Besides, this is something for when you get to my group and when we all understand things better. Anyway, I thank those parents and apologize just in case. However, I have not heard anything and don't expect to as I know them well and believe they trust me.

Pyramid of Success
To recap April: I really hope you enjoyed the reading sessions on the "pyramid of success". Remember the two foundation stones:

1. Enthusiasm
You really have to honestly enjoy something if you intend to be good at it.

2. Work Ethic
You cannot do well at anything if you do not work hard to get what you want. No excuses. No primadonnas. No exceptions. All the other building blocks such as loyalty, honesty, trust, etc. rest upon these two corner stones. They apply to life as well and that is the great thing about our sport.

Looking Ahead
Look forward to the May Performance Meet on the 10-11 weekend. Also May is a hard-work month with a training camp on the May longweekend. Yes, real athletes will be slogging it up and down while the rest will be enjoying the cottage. Our group is getting ready to swim fast and this year, because of the trials in April, we have to train even harder.
