NYAC Head Coach's Report

The NYAC coaching staff wish to thank all members of the board and the entire club membership for a great year.  Your support and the commitment to excellence reflects our aim to provide swimmers with the very best programs to achieve success at the highest levels in our sport.

The strength in the Canadian system is the club programs and the Head Coaches that drive these programs.  We set standards for young people to aspire to and are responsible to see them competing at Provincial to National levels.  Athlete’s hopes and dreams to represent Canada are dependant on the sacrifice we ask them to make beginning at a very young age.  NYAC is such a place and I am proud to lead this club to perform and compete with the very best.  This year to date is our most successful based on all levels of performance.

Highlights include:

  • National Champion Julia Wilkinson at the Short Course National Championships in Calgary (200 IM);
  • Two swimmers on the Junior National Pan Pacific Team, Hawaii, January 2005;
  • Two swimmers on the Provincial Tour Team, U.S. Open, Texas, November 2005;
  • Two swimmers on the Ontario Team for Canada Games 2005, Regina, August;
  • Nine Provincial Champions winning 13 events, 47 medals and a fourth place team finish;
  • Seven Central Region Champions winning 14 events, 39 medals and a fourth place team finish;
  • Twenty-two Top Cup swimmers winning three events and an exciting fifth place team finish.

 And we are not finished yet.  Look for more outstanding swims at the LC meets including Central Regions, Provincials and Club Nationals in Winnipeg.

Next year our staff will remain intact with Mischa Sommerville in our Youth National program  Diego Pesce will coach both the Youth and Age programs and will the duties as Head Coach – Age Group.  John Calnan will move from swimmer to coach and be in charge of our Junior Program.  John is a national lever swimmer and was a top 8 finalist at last year’s Olympic Trials.  He graduates this year from university with a degree in Phys Ed and will be a great addition to our staff.

 Jenny Kent was outstanding as an assistant with the Intro program this year and will assume her duties now as Program Coach for Intro.  Allowing us to expand in the south section of North York will be our Intro 2 program with Carmen Draguceanu.  Twenty swimmers from our Glendon Wave program form the base of Intro 2 and we will grow in our higher groups to provide access to south end swimmers, especially in the Leaside area.

Some program locations will be modified to provide a better connection between groups.  Most notably is the use of the Douglas Snow pool on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  Four different programs will use these nights.  The 2005 – 2006 Practice Schedule showing programs, pools and times is now available on the web site.  Returning swimmers will be informed regarding group move-ups within the next few weeks.  This will permit for swimmer-coach communication to occur prior to next season and will assist in the early registration process in June.

Again, on behalf the NYAC staff, a big thank you for the support we have received in coaching this year.
