Head Coach Report

December 2007

Murray Drudge
NYAC Head Coach

Our first third of the 07-08-swim season captured the excitement and enthusiasm worthy of our 50th anniversary.

The Youth Cup and Mega City meets were an outstanding display of meet management, organization, membership support and hospitality. The high level of professionalism was enjoyed by clubs from all over the country - even one from the Cayman Islands - and has made the Youth Cup the meet to attend for this time of year.

Congrats to all for a great effort!

National News

Nick Karpov and Kyungsoo Yoon led the 15-17 categories. Both athletes achieved National standards for the first time.

After a best time in the 200 Back - 2:07:07 Nick gave everything the next day in the 100, missing the cut by just a little. Later that night it was his time for victory going under the standard by a half a second. From that moment on you could see the confidence in his swims winning a silver medal in the 50 Free 24:22.

Kyungsoo (The Rocket) also made a splash in the 100 Fly - 56:72 - winning a bronze medal and just off the club record.

Samantha Hu was solid in the Backstroke swims with a 2:30:28 in the 200 for a seven second drop. Her 50 Fly - 30:59 - and 100 Fly - 1:08:35 - were both top 8 in finals.

Kelly Lui was on track with best times in four of her 6 events. The best swims were the 200 Breast - 2:48:99 - and 200 Fly - 2:33:44. Both swims were just off Provincials.

Nathalin Moy pulled off a big swim in the 50 Free showing her sprint ability in a 28:02 and winning the event.

After so long without a best time Nicole Pierce blazes to a win in the 50 Fly on the last day. Out fast and grooving with her stroke, this was one of the highlights of the evening.

Kyle Resnick dropped ten seconds off his 1500 free (7th), adding this event to his repertoire of events.

Neta Yokev, who won a bronze in the 800 - 8:45:10, and silver in the 200 fly with a gritty swim of 2:05:11, was awesome on the back end.

Paul Bergen Meet

During the same weekend Michelle Williams and Andy Townsend were competeting for Team Ontario at the Paul Bergen Junior International Champs in Portland, Oregon. Some of the finest 18-unders from Europe, USA, and Canada, including the German Youth team, were in attendance.

Michelle got the ball rolling with a standout swim in the 100 Free - 56:68. This was her first time under 57:00 and she was 3rd in consols. The 50 Free was also stellar in a time of 26:35 placing 7th in the big final - wow ! Can she really break 26 seconds? The 50 Fly was almost in the medals with a big swim of 28:24.

Andy was not to be outdone and swam the 100 Fly in 56:46 breaking a sixteen-year-old NYAC Club record to place 6th in the finals. Brimming with confidence he swam the 200 Fly in 2:07:37 and placed 3rd in consols, never having been under 2:10:00 before. Get this - his 150m split was 1:31:00 - that's right - it should have been 2:03:00!! Capping off the meet Andy scored a bronze medal in the 50 Fly with 25:26 - an in your face race to the German team!
