2008 Eastern Canadian Championships

February 2008

NYAC Head Coach

Well done all National group swimmers for an outstanding display this weekend.

Etobicoke hosted the Eastern Champs for 2008 and it was held in long course due to the Olympic Trials on April 1 to 6 in Montreal. This was the last major preparation meet for swimmers to get used to LC before the trials. The site was well chosen as Etobicoke is arguably the fastest LC pool in the country and we really needed a boost as we are still in short course season.

Let's now get ready to finish off the last cycle into Montreal in preparation for the Trials.

Highlights

Rebecca Chud was outstanding this meet with 100% best times. Well split races and great form in both butterfly and freestyle were wonderful to see. Hard work and persistence are no doubt helping her to make the come-back we were waiting for.

Nick Karpov was our third place point winner (62 pts) with 100% best times in his events. Nick also earned three new National times in the 100 Back 59:50 the 200 Free 1:56:37 and the 50 back 27.82. Both the 200 Free and 50 Back were Top 8 swims in the big final.

Nicole Peirce stunned her teammates on the last day with her 1:05:18 time in the 100 Fly. She was just seven one hundredths off the time that would have qualified her for the Trials in Montreal. Awesome swim and one more shot at the Junior Provincials in London - good luck and well done Nicole!

Kyle Resnick made his National time in the 200 Fly with a 2:07:46 in the big final where he placed 7th. What determination and perseverance from this young man who is also only sixteen years old - outstanding swim and the first time under 2:10:00 for him for this event.

Andy Townsend was our second place finisher with 101 points. Andy tied for the Gold medal in the 50 Fly with a blistering time of 25:44. His 100 Fly was a new club record from twenty years ago with a time of 57:33, also a Top 8 in the big final and a new National time. His 100 Free is almost in the 51 range where he was 5th in the final with 52:21 and again a new National time.

Emil Tzvetanov is showing he is a real contender for National times. His 100 Fly was just seven tenths off with a 58:12. Watching his 100 Free time of 55:00 gave you the impression he is for real and is quickly making his presence felt in his new home at NYAC.

Michelle Williams is our top point winner scoring 103 overall in her events. She had 100% best times yet again, three new National times in the 200 Free 2:06:16, 100 Fly 1:03:84, and the 100 Back 1:07:03. There seems to be no slowing down for this tireless worker who excels at the big meets - well done!

Neta Yokev also lowered his time in the 200 Fly with a fast time of 2:07:61. Racing his teammate Kyle Resnick in the big final, both boys gave solid performances (8th place).

Kyungsoo Yoon broke the club record in the 50 Free with a time of 24:10. This is so fast that with fifteen meters to go he made the field look like they were standing still due to his great ability to accelerate at the finish.

The 15-17 boys broke their Canadian record in the 4x100 Free relay from last summer - unfortunately, Pointe Claire was in the same heat and just out-touched us, thereby winning the record setting time. The consolation was that it was still an Ontario record and a great job by our boys for going after it!!!
