The 2008 Senior Provincials were held this past weekend at U of T.

The long course format was used in preparation for the Olympic trials later in April and the racing was jam packed with exciting swims.

Michelle Williams led the team swimming a blistering time of 57:77 in the women's 100m Freestyle, becoming a first time Senior Provincial champion. People who watched were treated to a great display of how the event should be swum. Just itching to go out with the top seed Laura Pomeroy at the 50 mark, all I could do was to get her to be patient. "The last 15 meters is called the dead zone for a reason", I reminded her, "split less than one second between your 50's and focus on coming home strong". She was 7th at the turn (28.6) and with every stroke she was gaining on Laura on the way back. Now we're in the dead zone and sure enough people are dying, with Michelle passing the entire field and just out touching Laura for the win - (2nd 50 was 29.1) wow!
See this race here...

Our boys relay team consisting of of Nick, Rocket, Neta and Andy won the men's 4x100 free relay beating all the university teams. With a time of 3:36.84 just off the Canadian record of 3:34.52 set last summer, it was not bad for our 15-17 boys up against the men in college.

Kyle Resnick was eager to swim his 200 fly on the last day anxiously wanting to make a national time to go to Olympic trials. Again a great display of how to split a race - out in 1:03:2 and back in 1:06:7 - the last three 50's were all exactly the same! Kyle was fourth and shaved two seconds off his best time!

Andy Townsend put on an awesome display in the Men's 100m freestyle. Technical advancements in his stroke are paying big dividends as he swam a 52:8 and the first time under 53:00 seconds.

For a meet that was timed finals and early in the season, we swam exceptionally for the most part. Strength of will and determination are key ingredients when you're not feeling rested and ready. Put that together with a knowledge of how to split races and fast swimming is the result.
