President's Message

February 2007

Marjie Chud
NYAC President

It's positively balmy outside! Have you noticed that it is also a little brighter on the early morning drives to the pool? OK, so I am being a little optimistic, but this can only mean that short course season is almost over and long course season is on the way. Congratulations to all the swimmers who competed at the Central Region Championships and the National swimmers at the Eastern Nationals. As Coach Murray reported at the board meeting last night, our swimmers are doing NYAC proud both in the water and on deck. Thanks to all the coaches and good luck to everyone who is competing at the Provincial Championships. GO NYAC!!!

There are a few club events to look forward to over the next few months. Our annual Swim-a-thon is on the morning of Saturday, April 14 at Douglas Snow. Clubs from all across Canada participate in Swim-a-thon. Funds raised are split between Swim Canada and clubs to help promote swimming in Canada. In NYAC's case, 95% of the money each swimmer raises will go directly to our club so we encourage everyone to get out there and fundraise beyond the $100 minimum. The event itself is a 5000 metre (or more!) or two hour swim followed by a breakfast prepared by the National and Provincial 2 groups. Swim-a-thon packages and an information letter will come from NYAC fundraising director, Cheryl Kicksee, through your pool reps very shortly.

Our next meet that we host is the May LC Performance Meet at U of T on May 12-13. Sign up for officials will take place very soon with information coming from your pool reps. The meet package is posted on the NYAC website so it will be very clear when your children are swimming. Each family is required to work 3 sessions.

We are in need of a volunteer or team of volunteers to coordinate the officials and coaches' food for the May LC Performance Meet. There is a 75 point bonus for this job. There are only four sessions at this meet and no finals which means that the only meals provided are two breakfasts, two lunches, and snacks following the afternoon sessions and throughout the day. The location we use at U of T has a refrigerator but no oven or stove so meals are generally simple. We are sponsored by Pepsi-QTG Canada so all of our drinks are ordered through our sponsor. There are several parents who are willing to donate food items such as muffins, sandwiches and salads. The role that we are looking to fill requires the volunteer(s) to coordinate this effort and be present during the meet. Please contact me ASAP if you are interested.

NYAC will publish a newsletter at the end of the short course season in March and Vivian Hu, the communications director, and her team are seeking submissions. Please continue to look at our website on a regular basis for updates from the coaches and the club. There are several ongoing programs such as Shop and Support and Loblaws gift cards and the information is either on our site or provided through links on our site. Thanks again to William Williams, Website Coordinator, for keeping the website so current!

Once again, good luck to provincial swimmers and I wish everyone an enjoyable (and restful) March Break.

Marjie Chud
