Nationals - The Oakville Masters Swimmers
participated at the 2009 Canadian Masters Swimming
Championship this past May Long weekend. All provinces were represented with
1000 participants among them 100 year old Jaring Timmerman.
The Oakville Masters really
showed that they can swim fast and age is not stopping them. Our Team did amazing... Out of 117
teams our team placed 24th with only 11 swimmers. The top team had over
100 participants. All our
swimmers placed among the top 12 in their age group,
events and swimming PB's. We had 7 gold 9 silver 6 bronze and
11 places below 10th.
One of the relay teams 4x50 free swam under the
Canadian record but placed 3rd.
Masters is not really ‘All About
Winning’ but we have some winners and should acknowledge them when they
do as well as Jackie did. Here
is a great article about Jackie called
Masterful Performance
in the Oakville Beaver.
Andrew Hurd (three time Olympic
swimmer and Canadian record holder) sat and cheer with our
Oakville team.
The swimmers swimming Nationals were Jackie
Hatherley, Valerie Scott, Sonia Lopes, Jennifer Agnew, Sylvie
Tremblay, Janice Gibbs, Will Mckinty, Michael Parker, Tom Rebstock,
Michael Liepner, Gord Hurd and Coach Mette. See photos below.
Runners - A few of our Masters swimmers
participated in the Toronto Women's Half Marathon May 31st
I was told that the runners did not get PB's but it was worth running as
there were hunky firemen working at one of the
waterstations (see picture) Cadbury chocolates handed
out at the last water station and a very scenic and enjoyable route on
trails through the Don Valley. And, instead of a medal they got cute
little necklace! The course was not conducive to a good time as it was
very narrow in parts and lots of turnarounds, bridges, etc.
Congrats to below Masters swimmers for completing the 21 km below their
times.

If you enjoy swimming, are 18
years of age or older, and like the idea of fitness or competitive
swimming, then Masters swimming may be for you. The Oakville Masters
swim at White Oaks High School Pool. Our program starts in September
and runs until the late June. Our swimmers span a wide range of
abilities. Each swimmer is matched with the closest group that will
challenge but not frustrate them. Often these people will swim
together for many years. Each swim session offers a workout,
designed by our professional and experienced coaches, to meet the
individual needs and expectations of the swimmers.
Fun, Fitness and Friendship is the motto of Master
swimming.
Masters Swimming encourage fitness, provides opportunities to increase
physical fitness, improve stroke techniques, and participate in social
activities. The level of participation in any aspect of Oakville
Masters Swimming is entirely up to you, the swimmer, be it lap swimming
for fitness, training for competing in triathlons or swim meets, or
swimming at any level in between.
Oakville Masters is one of the oldest
Masters clubs, founded in the 1970's. Over the years the club has
evolved. There were times when the club was actively competing as
a team. Recently we seem to be getting back into it, with a few
members participating in Masters meets. We still have some of our
early members. This only proves that swimming can be a life long
joy.
All of our sessions are full at this time.
Registration of new members is limited to Oakville residents. A
waitlist is being kept. Please contact us now if you would like
to get on the waitlist. Hope to see you in the pool.
